After keeping mum for months, the lead character’s name and rank in Star Trek: Discovery has finally been revealed. On Monday, it was revealed that the series will star The Walking Dead actress Sonequa Martin-Green as First Officer Michael Burnham.
Bryan Fuller, the executive producer of the series, earlier referred to Martin-Green’s character as Lieutenant Commander. But now both, startrek.com and the Star Trek: Discovery Twitter account are calling her character by the new name. A First Officer is the second in command on a starship, just below the captain.

This would be the first time that the lead character in a Trek series isn’t the ship’s captain. To which, Fuller said that the series would get a chance to tell a different kind of story. The production team used a codename ‘Rainsford” for the character’s name and many sites assumed it to be the final one.
The other cast of the series includes James Frain as Spock’s father Sarek, Maulik Pancholy as Dr. Nambue, Jason Isaacs as Capt. Lorca and Michelle Yeoh as captain of the Shenzhou.
The Walking Dead aired its finale last night and CBS was probably waiting for this to make the official announcement about its lead character. We still don’t have an exact date when the show will premiere.
Star Trek: Discovery was supposed to premiere in early 2017, but the dates have been changed twice. As of now, it is expected to launch sometime in late summer or early fall. The information was provided by CBS chairman Les Moonves.
