Apple refreshed their MacBook Pro series late last year and it received a mixed response. While the 2016 iteration was the best in some departments and failed to impress in others, the fans are hoping a better overall laptop this year. The launch of MacBook Pro 2017 is still far-off, but the rumors suggest the laptop series be not that impressive, at least when RAM capacity is concerned.
The MacBook Pro 2016 series wasn’t well received by many, primarily because of its issues with battery and specifications. The RAM capacity on the 13-inch model was limited to 8 GB while the larger 15-inch model had a RAM of 16 GB, which couldn’t be increased even if you purchased a customized unit from Apple.
A RAM capacity of 16 GB might be enough for most users for their daily works and occasional heavy usage, but the professionals with heavy duty work weren’t happy at all. The option to expand the RAM capacity becomes even more important when you are talking about a premium laptop for which you are shelling out thousands of dollars.
Things aren’t expected to change with the 2017 iteration as well. Some reports say that the MacBook Pro’s RAM capacity could go as high as 32 GB with a standard of at least 16 GB. It is good that Apple is making 16 GB RAM capacity standard, but the upper limit of 32 GB is still disappointing.
Phil Schiller, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing at Apple, has clarified that the 2017 MacBook Pro won’t necessarily have higher RAM capacities as it was earlier reported.
Some fans say that 8 GB RAM is fine for the buyers looking for an entry-level laptop. An entry level MacBook with 8 GB RAM would indeed be necessary for Apple to stay relevant in the market, considering their products already start with a premium price tag.
The speculation that the MacBook Pro 2017 would come with Intel’s Kaby Lake confirms that the laptop series will come with 16 GB RAM at max. This is because of the restrictions that the processors pose for the manufacturers to limit the RAM capacity.
If Apple chooses to wait for a bit till the Intel Cannonlake processors are made available to the manufacturers, the MacBook Pro 2017 could come with a higher RAM capacity. For the release date, Apple is expected to launch its next laptop lineup in October. The prices would be around $1,200 for the 16 GB RAM variant.
