Why make Diablo 4? Well, because there is more story to tell since the evils have escaped the black soul stone and the Nephilim might end up as the antagonist. If the next Diablo game was just 3rd person, we wouldn’t necessarily be against that. What’s important to us is the grind and atmosphere and the items etc. Also, we don’t want it to be a mobile game.
Could Diablo 4 still be in development even after BlizzCon 2016?
They better get the art direction right this time because we don’t want any cartoonish art style nonsense. D3 wasn’t as dark as the previous two. Because those game were the definition of dark. If you go back and look at when D3 was first teased, people were already comparing it to the previous two and saying how it was a total artistic departure from the series and was a complete WoW makeover. While the bright and colorful look may work for a pure fantasy game like WoW, it has never been the approach to Diablo until 3. Which is when it got unnecessarily cartoony.
We were sad about the change in art styles for starcraft into starcraft 2. We’re excited to see how Diablo 4 changes the game (for which, hopefully, there will be big changes and it won’t feel like just an expansion). D2 to D3 was fantastic. Hopefully, they keep that train rolling. Torchlight is decidedly colorful, it was never trying to be anything else. So we don’t know/care about the Diablo series being better than Torchlight. That game even carried the torch (bad pun intended) in the spirit of sorts from the old D2 days. The story was similar too (if you really look for it that is). It was a solid RPG experience on its own.
Maybe it will be the antecedent for Diablo, with Inarius, Lilith and the creation of a sanctuary. We expect the gameplay will be revolutionary, hardcore, frightening giant boss battles all in 3rd person view. Basically, if it would be a mix of Dark Souls, Skyrim, Witcher and Diablo with a lot of action and bloodshed and with less RPG elements, a lot of people would be happy.
