Well, you don’t have to search only on torrents for pirated content any more. Because latest trend points towards increasing use of social media to host pirated movies. In an incident that’s likely to get Aamir Khan worried, Dangal, his most anticipated movie that released yesterday, has been leaked online on Facebook. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Dangal a Hindi – word for Wrestling Competition, is a biographical sports drama film where Aamir Khan plays the role of Mahavir Singh Phogat, who taught wrestling to his daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari. Geeta Phogat is India’s first female wrestler to win a gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Her sister Babita Kumari won the silver medal. A Whatsapp video showing Aamir Khan’s transition in the movie from a fat unfit man to the present ultra-fit wrestling trainer went viral. Fans were amazed at the epic transition and the endurance power of Aamir Khan, even at this age. Just when everything looked to be going well for the Dangal crew, a recent Facebook leak comes as a severe setback for the film’s producers.
It looks like Facebook is the new place for pirated online content. A Facebook user who called himself Hashmi Ah, claiming to be from Dubai, leaked the entire Dangal film online. The video was reported and has been removed. But it managed to garner 4 lakh views and over 50 shares in the short span of time it was available online. Udta Punjab starring Shahid Kapoor also fell victim to rampant online piracy. Salman Khan’s Sultan and Rajnikanth’s Kabali also had to face online piracy issues.
It remains to be seen if Facebook has wiped out all traces of Dangal’s leaked online movie and if there are still footprints of the leaked video left in other social media sites.
