In a bid to take on the websites sharing child porn, a hacker group has attacked more than 10,000 websites of the dark web. It was found by the group that more than 50 percent content on the targeted server had child pornographic content, hence was taken down.
For the uninitiated, the dark web is a part of the World Wide Web that exists on darknets and overlay networks. It uses the existing public internet but can be accessed only through certain software, authorisation codes or a particular configuration.
Freedom Hosting 2 is the largest host of sites on the dark web and the hackers claim to have taken down 20 percent of the total websites on the dark web. It is said that the dark web is associated with most of the criminal activities and illicit content.
The hacked websites are now displaying a message that reads- “Hello, Freedom Hosting II, you have been hacked.” “We found while searching that your server is more than 50 per cent child porn.” “Moreover you host many scam sites, some of which are evidently run by yourself to cover hosting expenses.” “We are disappointed.” The stressed upon their zero tolerance against child pornography.
The information gathered from the hacked websites, that includes images of child pornography and personal data for sale, has been leaked online. The system files and account information from the databases of the websites has also included on the leaked information and is available as a free download. As per the reports, the data also included thousands of unverified email addresses of the US government.
It was being said that the hacker group is affiliated with a famous hacker collective Anonymous. But, the Twitter account @YourAnonNews, which has 1.7 million followers and is believed to be the official account of Anonymous, has refused to take credit for this case.
