Elon Musk Believes Artificial Intelligence to Be Dangerous; Cautions About Mass Unemployment

Many companies and startups may be investing heavily in artificial intelligence, but Elon Musk Elon Musk believes otherwise. He says that AI can put the world in a dangerous situation and even cause mass unemployment. He revealed his thoughts about the tech during the World Government Summit in Dubai.

It was the conference with 4000 attendees where Musk was being interviewed by Mohammad Abdulla Alergawi, the Minister of Cabinet Affairs and Future for the UAE. Musk stressed that he wasn’t referring to narrow AI, but the deep artificial intelligence which he said was pushing the world into a dangerous situation.

“One of the most troubling questions is artificial intelligence. I don’t mean narrow AI – deep artificial intelligence, where you can have AI which is much smarter than the smartest human on earth. This is a dangerous situation,” said Musk. “Pay close attention to the development of artificial intelligence,” he added while warning the world governments.

He also mentioned that automation and artificial intelligence will together take over 15 percent of the world’s workforce. And this wouldn’t take long, according to Musk, the disruption won’t take more than 20 years. He believes that humans are getting heavily dependent on technology and he foresees the world where humans are already cyborgs.

It is not just Musk who believes automation to be dangerous in the near future, an Oxford University study supports his claim. It was found in the research that about 47 percent of American jobs will be at risk in the next two decades because of automation.

“There will be fewer and fewer jobs that a robot cannot do better,” says Musk. The only way to counter this, according to him, is to ensure some kind of universal basic income. When asked if he thought AI was a good or a bad thing Musk said, “I think it is both.”
