2005 POWER RANKINGS WINNER

 

He only finished 15th in Sunday's Ford 400 but Tony Stewart didn't even need to start to win this year's Power Rankings. Stewart had clinched the title last week and added the big title after Sunday's race, the 2005 Nextel Cup Champion. Greg Biffle won the race Sunday but was too far back to make any serious challenge to Stewart, he finished the year in 2nd place in the Power Poll. Jimmie Johnson certainly didn't have the race he needed Sunday in the Chase to the Championship but he had already clinched 3rd place in the Power Poll. Johnson cut a tire after working his way to the front of the field and had to settle for a 40th place finish in the Ford 400.  Mark Martin nearly won the race Sunday, finishing just inches behind Greg Biffle at the finish line, before settling for a 2nd place finish. He collected enough points to jump into 4th place in the Power Rankings, leaping teammate Kurt Busch. Carl Edwards took over the 5th place spot in the final Power Rankings with his 4th place finish in the Ford 400. Edwards also collected the maximum bonus points by leading the most laps in the race as well as taking the poll.

 

Kurt Busch managed to hang in the Top 10 in the 6th spot despite being suspended from racing the rest of the season by team owner Jack Roush.  Busch of course was arrested on last week and charged by the Phoenix police for reckless driving. Matt Kenseth managed a 3rd place finish in the race Sunday and as a result finished in the 7th spot in the final Power Rankings. Jeff Gordon remained in 8th place as a result of his 9th place finish in the Ford 400 while Ryan Newman stayed in the 9th spot after he finished Sunday's race in the 7th place spot. Rusty Wallace managed to stay in the Top 10 as a result of him finishing Sunday's race in 13th place. It was a good finish for Wallace in his last race in the Nextel Cup Series.

 

The final 2005 rankings are as shown following the Ford 400 from the Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Team power ratings are based on a different rating system then is used by Nascar. Points are awarded based on a driver's performance on the track and awards points for only Top performances. A top 15, pole or leading the most laps is considered a strong performance and are awarded points based on finish. No points are awarded for anything other then a Top 15 finish and negative points are awarded for drivers that do not finish on the lead lap, fail to finish the race or fail to qualify for the race.
